Serving America |
Many people unintentionally keep daily interactions with those that serve them to a minimum. A "hello", "thank you", or small interchange of pleasantries does not allow for most of us to think deeply about the extensive work and sacrifice that brought our meal to the table. Behind the scenes lie the quietly underestimated and often exploited populations of immigrants who are meeting our insatiable demands for food and service. Serving America uses bold color and imagery to examine various views of the undocumented worker. Each peice features symbolism through object, space, or contrast. It is my hope that my art begins a conversation and brings the viewer awareness of the injustices that surround our immigration system, specifically as seen in the restaurant industry.
